2-Day Huangshan Sunrise Hike Overnight Summit Tour

Huangshan's sunrise is the iconic image of Chinese landscape painting come to life. Granite spires, twisted pines clinging to vertical rock, and a sea of clouds filling the valleys below — this is what Tang dynasty painters were drawing, and it still looks the same today. To see the sunrise properly you have to sleep on top of the mountain; the cable car only starts running mid-morning, and trying to ascend pre-dawn from the base is not realistic. UNESCO listed Huangshan in 1990.

This two-day private tour starts in Huangshan town (Tunxi old quarter, served by direct high-speed train from Shanghai, Hangzhou, Hefei, and Wuhan). Your English-speaking guide takes you to the cable car base, up the steep cable car to the summit ridge, on a half-day hike along the iconic West Sea Grand Canyon ridge route, and to your summit hotel for the night. Day 2 starts brutally early — 04:30 wake-up to walk to the eastern viewpoint for sunrise (~30 min walk in the dark). After sunrise you continue on the ridge to the other major peaks before descending by cable car.

Day-by-day:

  • Day 1 — 09:00 Pickup at your Huangshan hotel or Tunxi station; drive to the cable car base; ride cable car to the summit ridge; afternoon hike a section of the West Sea ridge route with stops at Bright Summit and Flying Rock viewpoints; check in to your summit hotel; sunset on the western viewpoint; dinner at the hotel
  • Day 2 — 04:30 Wake-up; 05:00 walk to the eastern sunrise viewpoint; 05:30–06:30 sunrise watch (timing varies by season); breakfast back at the hotel; 09:00 continue the ridge route to Lotus Peak area and Mid Sea viewpoint; 13:00 lunch; 14:00 descend by cable car; 17:00 drop-off at your Huangshan hotel or Tunxi station

Who this is for: Active travelers who want one of the great mountain sunrises of Asia. Photographers, landscape lovers, hikers, and anyone willing to do an early wake-up for a payoff view. Ages 10+ recommended — the trails involve a lot of granite steps and exposed ridges with safety railings, but children younger than 10 will struggle with the length and the cold pre-dawn walk.

Logistics: Best April through November (autumn and after-rain summer days have the best sea of clouds; winter has snow-on-pine scenes but icy paths). Summit hotels book out far in advance — please reserve at least 6 weeks ahead in peak season. Pack a warm layer (summit is much colder than base, even in July), gloves for pre-dawn, headlamp, and sturdy walking shoes. Pre-dawn winds at the viewpoint can be fierce.

Local Roads. Global Eyes. We pre-book the summit hotels (the bottleneck) and have Anhui-based licensed guides. Want to chain Huangshan with Hongcun and Xidi UNESCO villages, or Hangzhou and West Lake? .
