Overview
2-day private tour from Kashgar to Tashkurgan Tajik autonomous county on the Pamir Plateau. Karakul Lake, Muztagh Ata views, Stone Fort, foreign-visitor permits handled.
About This Tour
If you only have two days in the Pamir, Tashkurgan is the right call. The Tajik autonomous county of Tashkurgan sits at roughly 3,100 m above sea level on the Chinese side of the Pamir, three hours short of the Pakistan border. The drive in from Kashgar follows the G314 Karakoram Highway through the Ghez River canyon and past Karakul Lake, where the 7,546 m snow cone of Muztagh Ata reflects in turquoise water on a still morning. Tashkurgan itself is a working Tajik town with a 1,300-year-old Stone Fort ruin, high-altitude grasslands, and one of the most ethnically distinct populations in China.
This is a private 2-day tour from Kashgar with a licensed English-speaking guide and a driver who has run the G314 for years. The Pamir corridor south of Kashgar is a restricted border zone — foreign visitors need a permit at multiple military checkpoints, and we handle the paperwork in advance. Altitude sits between 3,100 and 3,600 m for most of the trip — manageable for most adults but pace yourself on day one.
Day-by-day:
- Day 1 — 08:00 pickup in Kashgar; drive south on the G314 through the Ghez canyon; lunch stop at a Kyrgyz tea house; afternoon photo stop at Karakul Lake with Muztagh Ata in the background; continue to Tashkurgan (~3,100 m); evening visit to the Stone Fort ruins for sunset; overnight in Tashkurgan
- Day 2 — Morning at the high grassland viewpoint outside Tashkurgan (yaks, Tajik herders, snow peaks); short visit to a nearby Tajik village if conditions allow; lunch in town; return drive to Kashgar with a second photo stop at Karakul Lake; arrive Kashgar by evening (drop-off at hotel or airport)
Who this is for: Travellers who want a taste of the Pamir without committing to the full 5-day Karakoram run, photographers chasing Muztagh Ata, anyone curious about the Tajik minority. Minimum age 8. Not recommended for travellers with serious heart or lung conditions because of sustained altitude above 3,000 m.
Logistics: Private 4WD or comfortable van. One night in Tashkurgan in a clean local hotel. All entry tickets, foreign-visitor permits and military checkpoint paperwork handled by us in advance — we'll need your passport details a week before the trip. Daily breakfast included. Bring layers — even in summer Tashkurgan can drop to single digits Celsius at night. Foreign passport required at every checkpoint, keep it on you.
Local Roads. Global Eyes. We're a Beijing-licensed inbound operator with permits and Kashgar-based drivers who run the Pamir route every season. Want to extend to the full Karakoram Highway tour or add a Kashgar Old Town day? WhatsApp +86 139 1764 3020 or liuwen@nebulatrip.com.
