Overview

Private day tour of UNESCO 2021 Maritime Silk Road sites in Quanzhou: Kaiyuan Temple, Qingjing Mosque (oldest in China), Song-dynasty Luoyang Bridge.

About This Tour

In the Song and Yuan dynasties, Quanzhou was the largest port in the world. Marco Polo called it Zayton, ships from Persia and East Africa unloaded here, and the city's mosques, Hindu temple ruins, Manichean shrines, and Buddhist monasteries sat side by side in a way nowhere else in China matched. UNESCO finally caught up in 2021, inscribing 22 of Quanzhou's sites collectively as "Quanzhou: Emporium of the World in Song-Yuan China." This one-day private tour hits the three most important.

You'll start at Kaiyuan Temple, a 7th-century Buddhist monastery still active today, anchored by its two famous Song-dynasty stone pagodas — five-storied, octagonal, and carved with hundreds of Buddhist figures. From there your English-speaking guide walks you through Quanzhou's old town to Qingjing Mosque, founded in 1009 and the oldest surviving mosque in China, built in a Syrian-Damascene style by Arab merchants who had settled here. After lunch you drive out to the Luoyang Bridge, a Song-dynasty stone bridge built across a tidal estuary using oysters as natural mortar — an engineering feat 800 years before reinforced concrete.
